Guiding principles:

Dance Gate Lefkosia Cyprus (DG) is one of the founding members of Dance House Lefkosia and one of the two member organizations that constitute the L_DH Dancehouse Lefkosia

Dance Gate Lefkosia Cyprus ( DG) is a non profit organization that actively promotes and supports the development of dance as a contemporary and interactive art forms working closely within the vision and framework of the European Dancehouse Network . Due to Cyprus’s geopolitical position as a European country on the furthest of South Eastern Europe Dance Gate’s particular vision and aim is to promote dance and culture at the crossroads of cultures as a crossroad between three continents and Nicosia still remaining the only divided capital of Europe.

Dance Gate Lefkosia Cyprus ‘s strategies are threefold:

a) The enhancement of creativity and the promotion of young and more established choreographers, giving opportunities for dance research within the fluid borders with the other performance arts so as to redefine and expand the choreographic field on the island

b) to mobilize political power for the necessary infrastructures to support dance and dance artists from both sides of the buffer zone

c) aims through festivals, research, seminars, lectures, conferences, publications exchanges and a growing network to create the necessary artistic and theoretical support for the dance to grow in multitude ways at the crossroads of cultures within the wider contemporary arts context

Location

The building of the Dance House Lefkosia used to be the old food Market of Ayios Andreas in Nicosia ,purpose- built in the mid-40s during the British occupation.

In 2013, after the necessary renovations, the building has been conceded to the non -profit organization L_DH Dancehouse Lefkosia by the Cultural Services of the Ministry of Education and Culture in collaboration with the Municipality of Nicosia for the support of dance and its development in Nicosia and on the island on a local and international level.

History

Since 2007 Dance Gate has organized numerous workshops/ and performances with guests such as Julyen Hamilton, Henrietta Horn, Eduardo Fukushima( Brazil), Sofia Mavragani ( GR) Mafalda Deville(PT) Alexandra Waierstall( D/CY) and yearly Conferences on the Dynamics and Prospects of Contemporary Dance with speakers such as Peter Hulton (UK) and Dorinda Hulton (UK) Dara Milovanovic (Cy/ Serbia) , Stavros Karayiannis, Avra Sidiropoulou, Fotis Nicolaou and others. Important audience development project has also been the BODY & SOLI a presentation of eight invited Cypriot choreographers to share their working processes mentored by the invited guest dance artist Angus Balbernie, UK.

Since 2008 DG runs a yearly dance festival the ‘‘No_Body Dance & Performance Arts Festival” which is an international dance and performance arts festival. Guests so far have been from an international spectrum of dance and performance artists such as: Eduardo Fukushima(BR) , Arno Schuitemaker(NL), Alexandra Waierstall( D/CY), Harry Koushos (CY), Fotis Nicolaou (CY), Machi Demetriadou- Lindhal (GR/CY), Elena Agathocleous & Lucasz Walewski (PL/CY) , George Rodosthenous (CY), Nekarios Rodosthenous,(CY) Pascal Caron (Canada/CY), Lefteris Moumtzis, Marina Poyiadji, Milena and George Koulas(CY), Mafalda Deville(PT) Jasmina Krizaj(SL) & Cristina Planas Leitão(PT), Stella Eftychiou ( CY) Aneesha Michael (CY), Athena Georghiou (CY) Panayiotis Tofi (CY) , Maria Karolidou ( CY) Ioanna Kordatou ( CY) ,Sevim Akpinar (CY) & Toya Akpinar(CY)

From 2010-2014

Dance Gate has been partner of the EU funded programme MODUL DANCE of the European Dancehouse Network ( 2010 – 2014 ) bringing to Nicosia important events film screenings, residencies, performances and Carte Blanche with artists such as : Nuria Font (SP), Fearghus O’ Conchuir( Ireland), Jurij Konjar (SL), Alexandra Waierstrall (D-CY), Arno Schuitemaker (NL), Lilly Mihajlović (SL), Jasmina Krizaj (SI) & Cristina Planas Leitão (PT/NL), Thomas Kasebacher (AT), Harry Koushos (CY), Fotis Nikolaou (CY), Angie Hiesl (D), Within Modul Dance Dance Gate also organized the 1st Modul Dance Conference: “Dance/ Body at the Crossroads of Cultures” with keynote speakers Rustom Barucha( India), Guy Cools (Belgium),and numerous guests performers and presenters from all over the world.
